Pedal-powered reed organs, often known as pump organs, were once the most popular instruments in the United States. Manufactured by the Estey Organ Company beginning in 1860, these organs were often built into ornate and elaborate furniture. The organ we have recorded represents a high quality grand hall organ dating from the late 19th century. It is characteristically played by alternately pumping the two pedals, which forces air through the reed mechanism. Maintaining a strong, consistent tone on this instrument requires technique and effort, and we’ve included separate pedal sounds that can be mixed (or not) for added realism.
